Summary

'So the only question is: do animals other than man suffer?'

One of the great moral philosophers of the modern age, Peter Singer asks unflinching questions about how we should live our lives。 The ideas collected in these writings, arguing that human tyranny over animals is a wrong comparable to racism and sexism, triggered the animal rights movement and gave impetus to the rise in vegan eating。

One of twenty new books in the bestselling Penguin Great Ideas series。 This new selection showcases a diverse list of thinkers who have helped shape our world today, from anarchists to stoics, feminists to prophets, satirists to Zen Buddhists。

I read this in probably an hour total on and off of public transport picked up on a whim and it is phenomenally written。 Singer puts forward a compelling case against eating animals, as a vegetarian admittedly I felt rather smug as well I can’t be as bad as those discussed in the section referring to Mcdonald’s, however it’s definitely caused a reflection of whether I could perhaps cut out more eggs and dairy。 As well as this, it has convinced me that Animal Liberation should be towards the top I read this in probably an hour total on and off of public transport picked up on a whim and it is phenomenally written。 Singer puts forward a compelling case against eating animals, as a vegetarian admittedly I felt rather smug as well I can’t be as bad as those discussed in the section referring to Mcdonald’s, however it’s definitely caused a reflection of whether I could perhaps cut out more eggs and dairy。 As well as this, it has convinced me that Animal Liberation should be towards the top of my want to read。 I would recommend Why Vegan? to anyone, regardless of their stance on animal consumption。 Oh and it has a recipe in too for a lentil dal which is such a nice little touch to the book, more philosophy/ethics books should do that aha。 。。。more

I don't believe that I can rate a specific ethical argument on a five star scale, but only respond to the arguments made in the book。 Singer asserts that the way the meat industry treats animals is tyranny over non-sentient nonhuman animals which causes suffering and pain (which is always unnecessary)。 This main point was well defended throughout the essays and I may be onboard with them as I have no argument back other than "but I enjoy eating meat。" I don't believe that I can rate a specific ethical argument on a five star scale, but only respond to the arguments made in the book。 Singer asserts that the way the meat industry treats animals is tyranny over non-sentient nonhuman animals which causes suffering and pain (which is always unnecessary)。 This main point was well defended throughout the essays and I may be onboard with them as I have no argument back other than "but I enjoy eating meat。" 。。。more

I really liked this short selection of P。 Singer's works and feel like it would be great to use for students all over the World。 You will find here inspiring fragments of "Animal Liberation"。 Along with a very interesting story of how Singer even started to think about our obligations towards animals。 Ending with environmental arguments for veganism, and pandemic arguments for ending animal suffering。 I feel like it's a simply written summary of key concepts that could start much need, and still I really liked this short selection of P。 Singer's works and feel like it would be great to use for students all over the World。 You will find here inspiring fragments of "Animal Liberation"。 Along with a very interesting story of how Singer even started to think about our obligations towards animals。 Ending with environmental arguments for veganism, and pandemic arguments for ending animal suffering。 I feel like it's a simply written summary of key concepts that could start much need, and still too rare discussions about animals。 。。。more

I first tried veganism my sophomore year in college。 I had spent the summer studying in China and felt convinced of the diet’s superiority after reading Joseph Campbell’s The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, and Long-term Health。 I switched to veganism in Shanghai mid-way through the book after accidentally slurped a chicken skull from a soup one afternoon。 Nine months later, my girlfriend told me I looked I first tried veganism my sophomore year in college。 I had spent the summer studying in China and felt convinced of the diet’s superiority after reading Joseph Campbell’s The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, and Long-term Health。 I switched to veganism in Shanghai mid-way through the book after accidentally slurped a chicken skull from a soup one afternoon。 Nine months later, my girlfriend told me I looked like a skeleton at 135lbs。 As a naïve 19-year-old, I assumed I could live on bread, nuts, carrots, and hummus。 Her comment forced me to evaluate my experiment and deem it a failure。 I was not any healthier than when I started。 So, I re-introduced animals into my diet。 At the time, I paid little attention to the moral implications of meat-eating。 But looking back, I believe my confrontation with the animals I ate in China morally disgusted me。 In America, you can avoid the linkage between your burger at lunch and the sentient creature raised in a horrifying feedlot providing the patty。 After nine months living back in the United States, I had submerged my moral angst linked with the cruelty of eating sentient animals。 And now, eight years later, I’m revisiting veganism for moral reasons。 My diet is healthy, informed by Mark Hyman’s Peganism (Vegan + Paleo)。 I feel best eating vegan supplemented by some fish each week。 But I am considering eliminating the fish, adding a B12 supplement, and re-committing to veganism。 I’ve been considering this switch since I met my girlfriend, a vegan for moral reasons, in November。 But it’s a hard choice to make without a strong reason as it feels so limiting and difficult to accomplish while living in American society。 That’s why I picked up this book。 X book succinctly covers the moral rationale for veganism while offering additional resources for further learning。 It’s an excellent primer and a solid starting point for further exploration。 I’ll likely read his deeper dive into the philosophy of animal rights, Animal Liberalism, in the coming months。 。。。more

Everyone should read this book, especially meat eaters who are open to ethics and logic。 If you want to be a moral person, there is no reason to avoid the truth and insightful logic laid out by Peter Singer。

A short book with previous work, updated with a small comment on covid-19。Such impressive work, such impeccable arguments against eating animals。Peter Singer buried all arguments against veganism in the 70s。

A brief, interesting and very up-to-date book (as of the time of writing) on the ethics of eating meat。 This book did seem to answer my objections/questions as I was thinking of them in a rather spooky way which I found thoroughly entertaining。 My only major philosophical criticism was what I may call an over-reliance on utilitarian arguments which could have been supported by a few from other perspectives just to make the overall claims and conclusions a bit more robust。 It was convincing, inte A brief, interesting and very up-to-date book (as of the time of writing) on the ethics of eating meat。 This book did seem to answer my objections/questions as I was thinking of them in a rather spooky way which I found thoroughly entertaining。 My only major philosophical criticism was what I may call an over-reliance on utilitarian arguments which could have been supported by a few from other perspectives just to make the overall claims and conclusions a bit more robust。 It was convincing, interesting, and unfortunately is driving me further to abandon my lifelong love of meat。 Lab grown meat cannot come fast enough。 。。。more

I quick first, easy-to-comprehend insight into Singer's philosophy concerning animal welfare。 It deals both with non-human animals being eaten and non-human animals being experimented on。 On the one hand, I liked that it covers essays from different decades, dating back into the 1970s; on the other hand, that rendered a lot of the facts and data obsolete。 My favorite parts include his discussion on animals and language: the way we talk about animals but also that animals can't use our language t I quick first, easy-to-comprehend insight into Singer's philosophy concerning animal welfare。 It deals both with non-human animals being eaten and non-human animals being experimented on。 On the one hand, I liked that it covers essays from different decades, dating back into the 1970s; on the other hand, that rendered a lot of the facts and data obsolete。 My favorite parts include his discussion on animals and language: the way we talk about animals but also that animals can't use our language to communicate (their pain to us)。I'd like to point out that while I agree with a lot of what Singer writes in this book about the way we treat animals, he has highly ableist views about people with disabilities。 They are not addressed in this book but it's something you might want to look into before you support him with your money。 There's an excellent article on the NY Times by Harriet McBryde Johnson about her experience with him, you can read it here。 。。。more

I was an undergrad student when my philosophy professor (gay, feminist, probably vegetarian) asked us to read Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation。 I didn’t even bother reading it, my excuse was that I was mainly interested in classical philosophy and didn’t care about what modern philosophers had to say。 But who am I kidding? I didn’t wanna read a book that stated claims against my beliefs and habits。 I came across with this book in Barnes and Nobles and as a vegan was very excited to read it。 It’s I was an undergrad student when my philosophy professor (gay, feminist, probably vegetarian) asked us to read Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation。 I didn’t even bother reading it, my excuse was that I was mainly interested in classical philosophy and didn’t care about what modern philosophers had to say。 But who am I kidding? I expected a much more up to date and more definitive book。 Still it's a short and straight to the point material。 This book is a collection of chapters from other titles from Singer, e。g。 the 2nd chapter is freely available in the sample version of "The ethics of what we eat"。 Had I known these, I would've bought that book instead。 And except for the last chapter the rest is at least 10 years old。 I'm sure that due to the increasingly growing animal ethic movements the policies have become some I expected a much more up to date and more definitive book。 Still it's a short and straight to the point material。 This book is a collection of chapters from other titles from Singer, e。g。 the 2nd chapter is freely available in the sample version of "The ethics of what we eat"。 Had I known these, I would've bought that book instead。 And except for the last chapter the rest is at least 10 years old。 I'm sure that due to the increasingly growing animal ethic movements the policies have become somewhat stricter, so would've been great to see the progress in numbers (while animal suffering is becoming worse in Asia thanks partly to the wet markets and the increasing wellfare caused growing demand for animal products, I assume vegan and vegetarian communities are getting bigger and bigger in western societies)。Not a waste of money since Singer donates most of his income to charities :) But since this book left me with a tons of questions, like "Are there ways to consume meat, fish or animal products in a way that I cut down my animal-suffering-footprint to 5% or no?", let me buy "The ethics of what we eat" now :D 。。。more
